Data always had a social existence right from the start. Its just that we became more conscious now and moulded it into a form that assumed a supersonic identity. Lets see how it affects our lives now

While technology has been the driving force behind the Social Data Revolution (SDR), but it is the stories we create that have and will always dominate its application and use. I focused on sharing the things that were most important to me. These are the memories that are scattered across my digital existence, from Facebook, to Tumblr, and Flickr to Twitter, and SDR is a direct result of our innate desire to share them.

Projects, Q&A session (optional) You drive this session by asking any questions you might have, and I will answer them. Please spend a few minutes and think about beforehand what you are curious about, and come prepared. That way, you'll get the most out of this session. There will also be a couple of presentations by students who would like to tell the class about the project they are doing and get feedback from class and possibly pick up another student interested in joining them. Furthermore, there are some spaces available for interested students to attend the Fall 2012 Social Data Summit by the Social Data Lab held on Nov 19 for the first time ever at Berkeley (for simplicity, same room and time as the usual class, followed by dinner -- please contact Andreas for details).

After each class, Andreas invites 4 students for discussion of class-related topics over dinner, starting at 7pm.
Location: Students pick a restaurant within walking distance that is conversation friendly (i.e., not your random sports bar) and are responsible to make a reservation (if needed) for 7pm for 5 people. The couple of times we have a reception right after class, "office hours" will be held after the reception (probably 8:30pm, and if there is food at the reception, not in a restaurant but rather cafe or such).

Since several students emailed me today that they are out of town for the holiday, I think the best is to cancel class today. I don’t want to ask Seth Goldstein to come and then there are only a couple of students attending. Will send a follow up email on Wednesday.
In the meantime, here are a couple of recent articles about what we were planning to talk about:
